Its well easy mate, just do make sure U can see the sender unit (by looking into the fuel tank) above the fuel line, otherwise boot full of petty.!!
I used a chock of wood and a hammer to knock on the prongs of the outer clip, this unwinds it, remove the rubber gasket, (ur new unit should come with a new gasket too)
Its a lil twiddly to get the old unit out, but u just have to bend it in funny ways to get it out, and same to get new one in. Should only take 5mins really.
It really stinks tho.!

Get a Haynes manual? LOL
Seriously though I believe you have to gently tap the sender ring around with a chock of wood and a hammer to knock on the prongs of the outer clip to remove it.
Obviously ensure that there isn't much fuel in the tank, so it might be a good idea to drain it since you don't know due to not having a working gauge.
Disconnect the battery too just in case, but I've never done the job myself and so that's really all I know.

I replied to your other thread, although I've never done this job myself.

Replacing fuel sender unit & wipers
I've just bought a relacement fuel sender unit from Minispares for my 1988 Mini 1000 City. The kit comes with a new seal ? Any tips on fitting it and should I use a sealant as well ? If so, what type ?
Also the wipers don't park themselves when switching off......... Should they ? If that's not right, any tips ?
Thanks...... Steve

Sealant on fuel sender unit ?
Thanks for the reply Taffy..... I take it that the wipers should park themselves then ?
Anyone got any ideas about my other question...... Should I use a sealant as well as the rubber seal when relacing the fuel sender unit ?

Fuel Gauge/Sender unit issues
Hey guys, hope we are all ok and loving the minis!!
I have a lovely 62 Mk1 that has got a small issue with my fuel gauge always ever reading no more than half empty!!
I have had my float sender unit out and it seems to operates all good? I read in the parts section that there may be an issue with the gauge, sender unit and voltage not matching?? does anybody know what this means and how I solve it?? I believe the speedometer may have been replaced previously if that helps??!!
Cheers in advance
Mac

The early cars did not have a voltage stabiliser, so I think the sender unit is different. So if you;ve had a replacement speedo fitted you want to have a look and see if it's from a later car with a voltage stabiliser. then check what sender unit you've got. I assume there's a part no on it somewhere.

Hi Tim,
Right just had a look at the replacement speedo, no voltage stabiliser on it so that's a bonus maybe??
When i get the part No off the sender unit what do i have to compare it with to check if it is the correct type??
Off to maybe re-drain my fuel tank to find the part No :) . . . any excuse really :)
Cheers for your help much appreciated!!

According to Somerford Minis website, which is the best place for diagrams and part numbers, the only sender fitted up to 1964 is part no 2A2163. I don't know where you'll find that number, if at all!
Before doing anything else, have you tested that the gauge is working correctly by shorting out the two wires at the sender? This should send the gauge to Full.

Repair or replacement of bolt in type MK1 fuel sender unit?
Hi There, I am in need of either repairing or replacing my 1962 Mk1's fuel sender unit, My fuel gauge contstanly reads full and all suggested tests lead to a faulty sender unit. It appears that a new unit as a straight replacement is not an option due the pre 64 bolt in units being obsolete? I am planning on removing the sender and attempting a clean up/repair but would prefer to fit a new unit if anyone has any suggestions for retro-fitting or advise on a good solid repair method?. i have considered purchasing an available new estate/van unit which appears to have the same bolt in configuration and then modifying it to suit my saloon - but would be a last resort if repair doesnt work. The car is still running its original positive earth system with a new wiring loom during its 2012 restoration, its running a good gauge and good voltage stabiliser (both tested prior to installation and temp gauge reads perfect) - Any advise or suggestions greatly appreciated!

I assume you've tested it by disconnecting the wires from the sender and seeing that the gauge reads empty? This is to make sure the problem isn't in the wiring.
If the above test is ok, then the fact that the gauge reads full all the time suggests there's a short inside the sender, or there's a mechanucal problem inside and the float and/or potentiometer are stuck. I've never taken one apart but it's a very simple system and it's probably worth having a look and a poke around with a decent digital multimeter.

Mk1 Fuel Gauge
early mk1's used a differnt fuel gauge and sender unit which didnt have a voltage stabilser. the gauges and senders are not intercompatable. so my gess is either ur sender was replaced at one time or the fuel gauge but not both as needs be, if u put in a l8er fuel gauge in fit a voltage stabuliser

general help
my fuel gauge does asakly the same, iv not been able to figure why. sender seems to work fine and there is no voltage stabilser on my model i asume must be built in gauge, so only thing i cud think was it must be the gauge but im not sure. yeah 165/70r10 are fine on cosmics, mine were 6" rim think u cud get 5" rim too. miniumum width rim for 165's is 4.5". 5" is better tho. id get some cosmics or dunlop alloys again if i didnt have 8.5" discs. maybe one day il get a convershion to 7.9" discs. what year is your car u have central speedo? smiths pod gauges? or the crappy ones on the l8 minis that were prob made in korea. if u have a smiths gauge u cud try replacing voltage stabiliser there about £10, the way to test sender is if its a single connection type earth contact with ignition on and cheak gauge, if its the twin contact type join them together and read the gauge. fuel gauge is basicly a varible resistor. if ur car is very early like pre 63 then its a differnt setup without a voltage stabiliser and has differnt sender and gauge, if u mix parts from one type to the other they will give random readings.
